A family photo has gone viral for the most bizarre reason possible after being shared on Twitter.

Posted by Twitter user Matthew Anderson, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, at first glance the picture appears to show a normal family Christmas portrait.

But, as Mr Anderson revealed, there is a hidden secret lurking beneath the surface.

‘I post this old Christmas photo because I just noticed my pocket square is my sister’s hamster,’ he wrote alongside the antique snap.

If you look extremely closely at the image you can see that the pocket square appears to have an ear, eye and two paws.

Sneaking into the shot is the family’s pet hamster, Olivanna, poking out of Matthew’s jacket pocket. 

The remarkable photo garnered an instant reaction on social media, and has since been liked nearly 200,000 times. 

‘Things like this are the only point of Twitter,’ one person commented.

One commenter added: ‘Rodent on point. They never go out of style.’

‘I just realized that I need to follow more people with hamster pocket squares on Twitter,’ another said.

Others shared their own bizarre stories of what they did with their pet hamsters, with varying results.

‘No pithy comment, but I did carry my hamster on the train from Endinburgh to Stratford 20 years ago… they are very well behaved in pockets.’ one person said.

While another added: ‘So true. My hamster, Salem, used to love sitting in my dad’s shirt pocket while he walked around the house.’
