Fans swarm the sixth-annual Awesome Con three-day event in Washington, DC

People in costumes swarm Washington, DC, this weekend for its sixth-annual Awesome Con event that inspires fans to ‘celebrate geek culture’ featured in movies, comic books, television and games.

The three-day event is held at the Washington Convention Center where attendees can expect a variety of stars, games and booths to enjoy.

Half of the attendees at the event are expected to wear cosplay or special apparel to celebrate the characters they know and love.

Already, Friday’s event featured people dressed as recognizable characters from Batman, Star Wars, X-Men and the Power Rangers.

But that isn’t all that all attendees should anticipate for the Easter weekend. A star-studded group of people from the new Star Wars movies – including John Boyega who plays Finn – and the cast members from Boy Meets World will appear during the festival to meet with fans.

Awesome Con started in 2013 because the co-founders wanted to create a Washington, DC, version of Comic Con. The first event only saw an estimated 7,000 people, it but grew last year to an unprecedented 70,000 attendees.

Organizers are anticipating crowds just as large as they bring in Hollywood stars and a variety of activities – including an Easter egg hunt – for the three-day event.
