One stranded family told 9News the night had been ‘hell’, as a mix of cold temperatures and no food, water or a toilet meant the whole night was one that they want to forget.

‘It’s been pretty crazy. We’ve been stuck since about 9.45 actually,’ Annette Jones said.

‘It’s been hell … Not much you can do.’

Police say the 33-year old had crashed into a left-hand guard rail and got out to see how bad the damage was.

Numerous approaching vehicles then had to take evasive action, causing a separate crash which struck and killed the man.

Hundreds of motorists had to endure the entire night in their cars as emergency services were unable to divert traffic due to the crash occurring in between two major exits.
