Furious parents have stopped their children eating school dinners after photos of their lunches were revealed online.

A mother shared a picture of the turkey burger served to her daughter at Blairgowrie High School in Scotland, demanding to know if council staff would want to eat it.

The post sparked a wave of anger and prompted hundreds of other parents to share images of their children’s school meals, labelling them ‘disgusting, revolting and disgraceful’.

One father has now revealed he ‘cannot’ let his son eat food from the school canteen because it is ‘gross beyond belief’.

The turkey burger had been served to a pupil at Blairgowrie High School on September 4. According to parents on Facebook, they are charged around £1.70 for the meals.

On Friday afternoon, Tayside Contracts apologised for serving the burger – but defended its colouring.

David Rutherford has now said his two sons, who attend nearby Kinross Primary School, will not be having school dinners anymore.

The 47-year-old said: ‘We have lost all faith in sending our kids to school for lunch. We will be giving them packed lunches or have them come home now, because that is gross.

‘We are disgusted – we expect them to get food as good as what they get at home.

‘You can understand why the kids go to the chip shop or the bakers with that, it is gross beyond belief.’

David, who is a general manager in the food industry, said his son had previously complained about the school dinners, but he had dismissed the claims as him being ‘fussy’.

He continued: ‘We know he likes his chicken so it was very strange to hear him say he didn’t want to eat it.

‘We just thought he was being fussy. But when we saw that image we thought ‘no wonder he doesn’t eat it’.

‘If that was served to you in a restaurant you would take it back, I can’t let my son eat that. We are not expecting them to get a gourmet meal, but that is completely wrong.’

Carol Haxton, facilities business manager at Tayside Contracts, said: ‘Tayside Contracts produces over six million high quality school meals per year and our quality management systems and the skill levels of our cooks stand comparison with the very best.

‘However, on this occasion we clearly fell short of the high standards which we demand of ourselves and for which we are extremely sorry.

‘There is no doubt that the burger served on this occasion did not look appetising and the portion size was small.

‘My initial investigations have established that this was a product issue rather than any failure of our staff at Blairgowrie High School.’

However, Ms Haxton said the colour of the burger is what pupils should expect from a school turkey burger.
