On Thursday, the coast guard called off its search for him.

The father and son were at the beach with Robert’s wife, Samuel’s stepmother, who called 911.

They were visiting Oregon from Fort Collins, Colorado.

Witnesses described a ‘frantic’ scene at the ordinarily peaceful beach afterwards as search and rescue crews descended on it.

The search resumed with helicopters at first light on Thursday but the boy’s body is yet to be found.

In the early afternoon, they announced the search had been called off but did not indicate whether they had recovered Samuel’s body.
