Father-of-three loses 100 kilos in one YEAR by training for Sydney’s City2Surf fun run

From 220kg and unhealthy to a marathon runner! Father-of-three loses 100 KILOS in just 12 months after a snap decision over another unhealthy meal

  • George Hoeta, 42, shed nearly half his weight by dropping from 220kg to 120kg
  • He wanted to be an example to his children who are two, eight and 17-year-old
  • George has also traded his sugary desserts for protein shakes and steak dinners
  • He now also walks five kilometres six days a week to train for the annual fun run

A father-of-three has lost an amazing 100kg in the space of a year after recognising he had to be a better role model for his children.

George Hoeta, 42, from Blacktown in Sydney’s western suburbs, shed nearly half his body weight while training for the city’s City2Surf fun run in August.

And he revealed his incredible weight loss from 220kg to 120kg was prompted by a family meal.

How George lost the weight

  • He has started walking five kilometres six days a week
  • He completes the 14km distance of the City2Surf fun run once a fortnight
  • George hits the gym to do weights whenever he clocks off work
  • Rather than a calorific dinner with chips and a fizzy drink on the side, he now eats a protein heavy steak dinner with vegetables

‘We were sat there eating chips at the dinner table with the kids and I had the thought that if I keep going the way I am I’m setting a bad example for them,’ he told FEMAIL.

George said before deciding to make the change he was eating to excess,  included desserts after his meals.

‘If we were going out, we would always go out for a buffet,’ he said.

The freight logistics coordinator said because of his weight he was unable to play ball games with his children, and that also drove him to drastically alter his lifestyle.

His weight first ballooned from 98kg to 160kg around ten years ago after his appendix burst and he was unable to exercise – and has become gradually heavier since then.

‘I became one of those parents that didn’t really get involved with their kids and I wanted to change that,’ he said.

As part of his weight loss plan, he walks five kilometres six days a week and hits the gym to do weights whenever he clocks off work.

The Sydney father said his daughter Katie, 8, and son Jack, 7, have both helped support him along the way.

Taking part in the City2Surf had always been his dream, and part of his motivation to lose weight was being unable to stand while working as a marshal at a charity triathlon.

What was George’s typical day on a plate before?

  • LUNCH: Lasagne with a side of chips
  • DINNER: Mash potato with a soft drink on the side

What was George’s typical day on a plate after?

  • BREAKFAST: Protein shake
  • LUNCH: Light wraps with chicken breast
  • DINNER: Steak with a side of vegetables

He has run the 14km distance of the iconic route from Sydney’s CBD to Bondi Beach once a fortnight in preparation for the August 11 run.

Now his day on a plate looks much different, as he has traded his sugar-heavy desserts for protein shakes and vegetables.

He also makes sure his muscles get the nutrients they need after a punishing workout by eating a protein-heavy steak dinner.

With a recent government survey finding 63 per cent of Australians were overweight or obese in 2014-15, George said his achievements have provided an inspiration to his family and friends.
