Father-of-three sheriff’s deputy is fatally shot after responding to a call about marijuana theft in California

  • El Dorado County Deputy Brian Ishmael was killed Wednesday morning while responding to a theft a marijuana garden at a private residence
  • He and an off-duty San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Deputy were responding to a ‘call for service’ in Somerset, about 53 miles east of Sacramento
  • When they arrived, the two officers were immediately fire upon
  • The off-duty officer was injured and underwent surgery at a local hospital and has since been released, while Ishmael succumbed to his injuries 
  • Ishmael was a four-year veteran and a married father-of-three  
  • Sheriff D’Agnostini said that two men have been taken into custody in the shooting, but did not reveal their identities
  • One of the suspects was shot and is being hospitalized in an unknown condition

A Northern California cop has been shot and killed while on duty and two suspects are in custody. 

El Dorado County Deputy Brian Ishmael was killed Wednesday morning while responding to a theft at a marijuana garden at a private residence.

He and an off-duty San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Deputy were responding to a ‘call for service’ in Somerset, about 53 miles east of Sacramento. 

When they arrived, the two officers were immediately fired upon. The San Joaquin County deputy returned fire, authorities said.

The off-duty officer was injured and underwent surgery at a local hospital and has since been released. 

Ishmael, a four-year veteran and married father-of-three, succumbed to his injuries.

El Dorado Sheriff John D’Agnostini said at a news conference that two men have been taken into custody in the shooting, but did not reveal their identities.

He said one of the suspects was shot and is being hospitalized in an unknown condition, adding that there may be other suspects.   

Ishmael was a ‘loving father and husband’ who ‘worked in the community and lived in this community,’ D’Agnostini said. 

‘He was personable, easy to talk to, kind and always positive,’ he added.
