Father says traveling all around the globe with his family transformed his life

A man claims sailing around the world saved his marriage and family.

Caspar Craven, 45, wrote a book called Where the Magic Happens: How a Young Family Changed Their Lives and Sailed Around the World, which comes out Tuesday.

He claims being free from the pressures of modern life transformed his role as a father and husband, reported the New York Post.

He has three children Bluebell, 12, Columbus, 11, and Willow, 5.

Before their sailing adventure Craven said him and his wife Nicola, 46, ‘were having a crummy time.’ He co-owned a consultancy business, and Nichola, worked as an attorney part-time.

‘The pressures of money, work and children were catching up with us,’ he explained.

In 2009 the family decided they were going to leave London and join the ARC Flotilla, which is a fleet of 200 to 300 boats that make up the annual Atlantic Rally for Cruisers.

It wasn’t until August 1 2014 when they actually left, they thought five years would be enough time to save up and plan.

‘Many people assume you need to be wealthy before you can live your dream,’ Craven said in his book. ‘We made the decision to put our dream first and then created the wealth to make it happen.’

At the time, he co-owned a consultancy business, and Nichola, an attorney, worked part-time.

The family purchased the Aretha, a 53-foot sailboat, by taking out a second mortgage on their home. The sailboat they wanted cost between $500,000 and $750,000.

Over the next couple of years they traveled across the world and visited islands in the South Pacific, Australia, South Africa and Brazil.

Despite the life-changing adventure, Caspar admitted it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Nichola suffered from seasickness, and at one point Bluebell fought off a bout of Dengue fever.

The children were home-schooled during their time on the boat but now they are at a school in London and Caspar says the two years away has made them ‘more curious, confident, and bonded to their parents.’

‘It’s probably the thing I’m most proud of. By doing this, we truly changed our relationships. Sailing around the world saved my marriage,’ he said.
