Faulty deodorant can and candle spark freak explosion, leaving a teenage girl with horrible burns

A romantic candlelit bath almost turned deadly for a young couple who were saved by their cat.

Queenslander Ayla Good, 19, suffered second degree burns to both legs in a freak explosion sparked by a leaking deodorant can and tea candle lit next to the bathroom sink.

She has relived the horrifying ordeal by publicly sharing the story on social media to warn others, which has since been shared almost 400 times.

‘I just really want you all to know what can happen accidentally with a few everyday harmless products when mixed together in the wrong way,’ Ms Good wrote.

‘Firefighters have never seen this happen in 28 years, and the police said it’s a one in a million. Investigators have said we accidentally created the perfect storm and it would be almost impossible to recreate. I don’t want anyone else to go through what I’m going through right now.’

Ms Good and her boyfriend Will were enjoying a bath on June 20 in their Mount Gravatt East unit in Brisbane’s southeast, unaware a deodorant can had gotten jammed horizontally in a bathroom cupboard sink, which caused it to leak and spray continuously.

Ms Good got out of the bath because her cat Winter was persistently meowing outside the bathroom door.

‘All of that gas from the can set low on the floor, and with the light and fan off the room was filled with hot air,’ Ms Good said.

‘When I got up and opened the door that was enough airflow for the oxygen and gas to mix and create an explosion along with the ignited candle. The entire bathroom lit up, the ceiling exploded, metal bars bent, it was incredibly loud and the feeling of that heat was indescribable.’

The bathroom ceiling sustained extensive damage in the explosion.

‘With the steam in the bathroom, it somewhat suppressed the vapours to floor level and all it needed was oxygen when she opened the bathroom door,’ firefighter Damien Atkins told 7 News.

Will escaped uninjured, while Winter suffered burnt fur and whiskers.

Ms Good fared much worse and has been in agony since.

‘There’s a 50/50 chance I’ll need skin grafting to fix my legs,’ she posted.

‘It depends on if the burns deepen or get infected or not. What terrifies me is if Winter didn’t meow and if I didn’t get out of the bath to move her, we would’ve stayed in there for 20, maybe even 30 minutes and there would’ve been far more gas from the deodorant can which would’ve caused a far bigger explosion, one we most likely wouldn’t have escaped from it.’

Ms Good said it will take weeks to recover from the ordeal.

She will be off work unpaid for at least two weeks and possibly up to four and has since set up a GoFundMe page.

‘Moments like this really show just how fragile life is,’ she posted.

At this stage I’m too scared to go into our bathroom and sounds that sound like smoke detectors and lights that look like fire set me off. I wouldn’t wish this upon anyone.
