FEMAIL reveals the 7 decor trends worth knowing

Homeowners are often looking for simple and affordable ways to make their abode stand out.

So to help make it a little easier, the experts at leading Australian interior design company Bowerbird have revealed a number of ways you can revamp your space and ensure it’s on trend – without breaking the bank.

The Color Toner Experts

‘The trick to incorporating trends into your home styling is choosing the right one that suits your interiors,’ they revealed.

‘This means separating the best bets from the fads. It’s time to get inspired.’

Here, FEMAIL has rounded up their top seven tips.

According to the experts at Bowerbird, there are a number of simple and budget-friendly things all homeowners can do to make their space look on trend

1. MOODY PAINT COLOURS

White walls are a classic look when it comes to painting interiors and although it’s a trusty shade, darker colours are proving to be a popular choice.

‘Beautiful blends of navy and black will highlight décor in the room like white fireplaces, staircases and bookshelves,’ they explained.

‘To prevent it from looking too moody, use darker hues in sun drenched areas and if you’re not game for every wall, just create a statement wall instead.’

MISTAKES PEOPLE ARE MAKING AT HOME

– Using dated furniture

– Using a rug that’s the wrong sized for the space

– Owning lights that look cheap and make a room look tacky

2. NATURAL FURNISHINGS

These days people are wanting a touch of nature in their homes.

Bringing the outside in can often have a comforting touch and can add a unique spin to a space.

‘Think wooden bench tops in both kitchen and bathrooms, bar stools, occasional chairs and open shelving. These will create a timeless natural warmth to a room,’ they advised.

3. LEATHER AND VELVET

When it comes to creating a space that stands out, texture is important, which comes into play through the use of interesting materials and fabrics.

The Bowerbird team said that they believe this will be the year of leather and velvet.

‘Velvet in particular is being billed as the fabric of choice for statement soft furnishings. Forest green Chesterfield anyone?’ They said.

‘And as for leather, it’s all about bedrooms. Think upholstered headboards and quilted chairs. Shop around and go for the best quality you can afford.’

4. SHOW STOPPING DOORS

It isn’t just the inside of your home that has an impact on the entire aesthetic and now front doors are also receiving some attention.

‘Statement doors are on the up and whether you go for a front door of pastel shades or the more vivid Palm Spring vibe, its time not to skimp on your entrance space,’ the website said.

‘Frame with pretty plants and palms and a large door mat and you’re well on your way to a show stopper.’

5. TERRAZZO

People started to lose interest in Terrazzo at the end of last year but now it is creeping back up.

Terrazzo tiles consist of chips of marble, quartz, granite, glass, or other suitable materials and add a touch of elegance to a room.

‘Yes its an expensive option when it comes to tiling, but whether you go all out with colourful floor tiles or a beautiful marble Terrazzo bench top expect to see lots of more affordable options coming onto the market this year,’ they explained.

‘Even a couple of Terrazzo coasters can up the cool of your room.’

6. DECORATIVE FRINGE

In 2017, macramé became a popular way to style the home in the form of wall hangings or hanging pot plants.

Although it is mainly used for blankets and cushions, this doesn’t mean people can’t get creative with it.

‘You can expect light fixtures, mirrors and even more art sporting decorative fringing. A great trend for adding texture and a boho feel to your home,’ the Bowerbird team suggested.

7. WABI-SABI STYLE

The Bowerbird team explained that Wabi-sabi style is a Japanese philosophy which finds beauty in the imperfect.

This is when simple and natural materials have been clearly worn by time.

‘Translate that and it means adding jute, rattan and woven items like baskets, lighting and shelves made from fibrous materials, which add a comforting touch too any room,’ they said.
