FEMAIL road tests the rise of powdered beauty

The beauty world is renowned for shaking things up – and one of the latest ways they have done so is by creating face products in powder form.

Although face masks and cleanser powders are certainly not new in Australia, they’re having a big moment right now — and for good reasons.

They gently exfoliate your skin as they cleanse and many formulas also help to brighten, hydrate, and smoothe.

Here, FEMAIL rounds up some of the best powdered face products that are on the market – as well as road testing a couple with surprisingly mixed reactions.

Powdered masks and cleanses gently exfoliate your skin as they cleanse and many formulas also help to brighten, hydrate, and smoothe (stock image)

So first of all, why powder? The particles in dry powder allow for more exfoliation than liquid cleansers.

This often means that they are better suited for combination or oily skin, those with normal or sensitive skin just need to find one that’s formulated for their skin type.

The ingredients in a powder formula are activated when we choose to activate them by adding water, which means they last longer than liquid facial products, which only last six months to a year.

Powder cleansers and masks are also customisable as you are able to choose how much water you want to add to the mix.

Lemon peel, bearberry root, mulberry root and licorice extract act as natural brightening ingredients and help to balance overall skin tone, while tea tree oil and willow bark extract help absorb oil.

FEMAIL TRIES POWDER FACE PRODUCTS FROM SONIA ORTS

FEMAIL wanted to see what all the fuss was about so tried out the powder cleanser and face mask from Sonia Orts, Botanical Alchemy.

Like the products mentioned above, they need to be mixed with water, with the recommendation being mineral water.

Australian reporter, Billie Schwab Dunn, 23, applied the two products to her face. Here are her findings.

FLORAL CLEANSER – $56

The cleanser was the first product I used and although it was fun to mix the powder with water I couldn’t imagine doing it every day as it was relatively time consuming to ensure you were getting the right consistency.

Although the water and cleanser powder was fun to mix together I couldn’t imagine doing it every day

I didn’t enjoy the smell of the cleanser, it smelt like an unusual combination of goji berries and clay, so it wasn’t all that pleasant applying the smell to my face.

The main ingredient are the leaves and flowers of iris florentina which aims to offer relief from skin irritation and inflammation which I can’t say I necessarily noticed.

I did notice that my skin felt tighter once I applied the mixture but once I washed it off it felt like it had sapped out a lot of moisture from my face, although the rosehip extract is meant to remove dirt and impurities without stripping skin of moisture.

My skin didn’t have a bad reaction but it didn’t feel happy with this product.

This being said, this could all come down to the product not being suitable for my skin type but I most likely won’t use the product again.

RADIANCE FACE MASK – $58

Upon opening this pink powder my nose was instantly hit with the amazing scent of roses but once I mixed in the water it changed and seemed to have an underlying smell of clay.

The powder is made up of finely ground botanical and mineral active clays blended with extracts of petals and roots to form a deeply purifying mask.

It also acts as a powerful deep cleanser and healing mask that draws out impurities and noticeably reduces blemishes.

My face definitely felt cleaner and restored after the mask

My face definitely felt cleaner and restored after the mask

Like the cleanser I noticed that my skin instantly felt tighter and I noticed a difference once I took it off my skin after ten minutes.

Although I take relatively good care of my skin I am occasionally guilty of skipping my routine or sleeping in my make up after a big night.

My face definitely felt cleaner and restored after the mask as the ingredients are designed to combat tired and neglected skin, I would definitely use this mask again.

Although I had mixed reactions with these products it felt like a fun science experiment that brought a smile to my face.
