A female cyclist has died after being hit by a truck at a busy Melbourne intersection.

The woman was struck at the intersection of Toorak and Punt roads in South Yarra at about 2.15pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services were called to the area after the collision but the cyclist died at the scene.

The driver of the truck is being questioned by police.

Traffic diversions at the intersection are expected to be in place for some time, disrupting post-work commutes.
