Female cyclist is killed on Princes Highway as driver is taken to hospital for mandatory testing

A cyclist has died on a busy highway after being struck by a car.

Emergency services were called the Princess Highway in Waterfall, south Sydney, about 8am on Tuesday following reports a female cyclist was struck by a car.

Paramedics attempted to treat the woman but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

She is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged in her 70s. 

The female driver of the car, 23, was taken to Sutherland Hospital to undergo mandatory testing. 

‘Officers attached to Sutherland Police Area Command established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash,’ New South Wales Police said in a statement.

All southbound lanes of the Princes Highway were closed at Waterfall with motorists advised to avoid the area.

Light vehicles were diverted through McKell Avenue while heavy vehicles were instructed to park up.

Traffic controllers have since begun slowly directing trucks through the crash scene. 

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
