A frenzied Texas squirrel has terrorized people trying to leave their homes in a biting rampage which left victims needing stitches.

Sharlene French-Amezquita tried to shoo the animal from chewing away at her front door, but instead became the victim of an onslaught.

‘When I stepped outside the door he leaped on me and bit my arm, I pulled him off, threw him to the ground, and tried to get in the house,’ she told Click 2 Houston.

‘I couldn’t get in the house because he came back, he bit this leg’.

The bloodthirsty squirrel also targeted Katie Herrera, who said it was a terrifying experience and is grateful it was not her children who were attacked.

She suffered nasty bruising on her arm, which was peppered with red spots where the animal dug in its claws.

A picture of the medium-sized gray squirrel shows it perched menacingly on a garden fence.

Locals claim the animal was initially playful, but has recently started to become aggressive.

It has developed a particular taste for gnawing on front doors, and then snapping back at homeowners who try to drive it away.

The fear among neighbors is so steep that French-Amezquita says people bunker down in their homes during the day.

She said: ‘We usually don’t go outside in the daytime because he comes out in the daytime.’

The Texas Parks & Wildlife authority and animal control have both been contacted, but said they cannot do anything until the squirrel is trapped.
