Fierce debate breaks out over Maccas newest menu item

McDonald’s fans in a furious debate over the name of its newest (and tastiest) new menu item: ‘This is honestly an outrage’

  • Maccas fans are furious over the naming of a new potato-based menu item
  • Potato scallops with chicken salt were launched on Wednesday
  • But the summer menu addition is known by many names, dividing the country

Maccas fans have found themselves divided following the launch of potato scallops on the popular fast food chain’s summer menu.

The menu, which launched on Wednesday, has been the centre of debates ever since – with some customers taking aim at the chain’s ‘Aussie’ burger after the egg which had appeared on previous version was taken off the menu.

But burgergate wasn’t the end as now customers are upset by the use of the term potato scallops.

Maccas launched potato scallops as part of their summer menu – but people are divided over their choice of name

Thousands of people have left comments on posts about the potato treats - there appear to be three main names for them, potato cakes, potato scallops and potato fritters

People in New South Wales and Queensland appear to be happy with the term ‘potato scallops’ but it’s all but caused a riot in the southern states.

Victorians tend to prefer the term potato cakes while New Zealanders and some South Australians like to call them potato fritters.

‘I have only known them as potato scallops and I’m 72 years old,’ one woman said.

‘Potato cakes always, I have, however, learned to tolerate the scallop name due to marrying a Queensland husband and wanting to stay married,’ said another.

‘Neither, they are bloody fritters,’ said a third.

Thousands of people commented on the names with people from Victoria claiming the only true scallop is a shellfish.

Maccas revealed they consulted Grimace, one of their mascots, over the name and he declared potato scallop to be appropriate

‘If you were to eat a scallop you would be eating a creature from the sea – if you were to order a scallop you would get the creature from the sea. It is a potato cake,’ one man said.

But this definition caused further heckling from New South Wales.

‘Potato scallops are made from scalloped potatoes – a cooking term for thin slices – they don’t resemble a cake at all,’ one man said.

‘We don’t say scallops we say potato scallops to clarify,’ said another.

Others appeared to boycott them because of the name.

‘I won’t touch potato scallops but I would have smashed some potato cakes. I reckon I would give these a rating of 0 out of ten based on their average name alone,’ one man said.

The restaurant predicted the great debate and even made a video showing three people disagreeing over the name.

In the video one man wants to talk about potato scallops – but someone corrects him, calling the potato cakes.

A third man pops into the background and is labelled a ‘Kiwi’ as he shouts ‘potato fritters’ at the camera.

The video prompted even more name suggestions including ‘discus chip’ and ‘potato frisbee’.

The Maccas team said they consulted ‘Grimace’ one of their age-old mascots who confirmed they should be called potato scallops.

The menu item comes with a side serving of chicken salt.
