Fifty more migrants landed in Britain today after 150 crossed the Channel over the weekend as people smugglers took advantage of a break in recent bad weather – bringing the total of arrivals this year up to nearly 7,900.

The first arrivals came this morning as a group of around 15 migrants made it to shore at around 8am in Dungeness while a further 10 were detained in Deal.

Border Force officials then picked up another 25 migrants who had gotten into difficulty, before bringing them to shore in Dover.

Today’s arrivals mean roughly 7,878 men, women and children have made the perilous crossing from France so far this year, but attempts looked to have stopped when the Autumn weather made it harder for ships to cross the Dover Strait.

Around 50 migrants managed to cross the English Channel and land on Kent’s shores today

Yesterday 144 migrants crossed in 10 boats, the first time more than a hundred have succeeded in a single day in almost a month.

French authorities also stopped two boats carrying 20 migrants earlier that day.

A further eight people made the treacherous journey on Saturday in a single incident.

Crossings had slowed after a period of wet weather, but calmer conditions over the last few days have seen nearly 300 people arrive since Thursday

The French also rescued five migrants – three suffering mild hypothermia – after receiving a distress call from a boat in difficulty off Sangatte shortly before 10am.

Clandestine Channel Threat Commander Dan O’Mahoney said: ‘France is a safe country with a well-functioning asylum system.

‘People should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach and not risk their lives making a dangerous and illegally-facilitated crossing.

‘We are unapologetically going after the criminals who are responsible for these crossings and last week put four people who risked dozens of lives behind bars.’
