‘F***ing k******d!’: Jos Buttler’s x-rated sledging against South Africa batsman Vernon Philander after he didn’t move out of the way of the ball
- England’s Jos Buttler explicitly shouted at South Africa’s Vernon Philander
- Buttler was incensed and called Philander a ‘f***ing k***head’ in Tuesday’s play
- The sledging was intended to put the batsman off his stride during the Test
England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler called South Africa batsman Vernon Philander a ‘f***ing k***head’ as tensions ran high in the second Test on Tuesday.
Hosts South Africa desperately attempted to bat to a draw on day five at Newlands but were unable to do as England ran out winners by 189 runs.
But with the Test in the balance, Buttler took issue with Philander getting in his way of the ball being returned to him from the field and made his feelings clear.

Buttler made his feelings clear and was heard on the stump mic calling him a ‘f***ing k***head’
The exchange was picked up by a stump microphone as Buttler was heard shouting: ‘F***ing move. No one is going to f***ing give it to you, just move. F***ing k***head! Get past that f***ing gut’.
Sky Sports quickly apologised for the picking up of expletive language as the second Test heated up.
Sledging is considered to be unsportsmanlike but it no doubt played a role as England won the Test with just 8.2 overs remaining.
Sky quickly apologised for Buttler’s words but it showed the level of tension during the Test
At the time of the Buttler-Philander bust-up, England needed three more wickets to seal a victory and tie the series, having been comfortably beaten in the first Test.
Prior to Philander standing in front of Buttler at the crease, England had made a major breakthrough with two big wickets, dismissing Quinton De Kock and Rassie van der Dussen.
South Africa were 237-6 before Philander stepped up to bat with hopes fading of the hosts reaching England’s lofty target.
Ben Stokes was the hero of the day for England, bowling out Philander to seal victory by 189 runs.
Speaking after the impressive win, opening batsman Zak Crawley said: ‘This was unbelievable – the best game of cricket I’ve ever played in.
‘All five days they were amazing – they didn’t stop singing, especially in that middle session. It was almost like a home game for us.’
