Two dead as blaze sweeps through working men’s club in Morecambe with victims pulled from the building as 10 fire engines battled the flames

Two people have died following a fire at a working men’s club in Morecambe, Lancashire Police said.
Emergency services raced to the blaze at the Gordon Working Men’s Club at about 3.50pm today.
Firefighters rescued two men from the building, but the pair sadly died a short time later. Lancashire Police is now in the process of contacting their next of kin.
Police and firefighters have not yet found what started the inferno and have begun a joint investigation.

Insp Abi Finch Hall, of West CID, said: ‘This incident has sadly resulted in the deaths of two men and our thoughts are with their families and friends at this time.
‘Together with our colleagues at the fire service we are now in the process of trying to establish the cause of the fire and those enquiries are on-going.
‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their understanding and support while we and our partners from the fire service and ambulance service dealt with this tragic incident and to ask for anyone with information to get in touch with us.’
Lancashire Fire and Rescue service tweeted earlier today: ‘We have 10 fire engines from Lancashire and @CumbriaFire at a fire involving a working men’s club on Springfield Street, Morecambe.

‘We were called at 14:42 and firefighters have rescued two casualties who are now being treated by @NWAmbulance.’
They added: ‘Firefighters are using six breathing apparatus, four hose reels, one jet and three ventilation units to extinguish the fire.
‘A number of roads in the area are closed and people are advised to avoid the area if possible.’
