A 54-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after he slashed another with a machete.

Firearms officers attended an address in Rustington, West Sussex, and shot the man with rubber bullets after receiving reports that he was attacking another.

The man’s injuries are serious but are not believed to be life threatening, police say.

Detective Superintendent Carwyn Hughes said: ‘We’re still trying to establish exact circumstances and anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact police quoting Operation Mongoose.’ 

The man’s injuries are currently being assessed by an ambulance crew.
