Firebrand Milo Yiannopoulos speaks at Berkeley

  •  Milo Yiannopolous spoke at UC Berkeley on Sunday after the official free-speech forum was cancelled yesterday
  • Only 100 people were allowed inside the plaza to hear him speak for security purposes and attendees had to walk through medical detectors
  • After the conservative student group the Berkeley Patriots announced the event was cancelled, Yiannopolous vowed to show up anyways

Right-wing firebrand Milo Yiannopolous arrived to UC Berkeley on Sunday for a free speech forum and was greeted by dozens of counter-protesters.

The official event was cancelled yesterday by the conservative student organization. He wrote on Instagram: ‘I did what I said I would do. I showed up. Sorry to the hundreds of people the police refused to let in.’

According to the Los Angeles Times, security was only letting 100 people or so in at a time and they had to go through metal detectors to enter the plaza.

Yiannopolous did not apply to use an amplification device, so he spoke to the crowd sans microphone.

He also sang the National Anthem. Also on Sunday, at least 100 NFL players took a knee in response to President Donald Trump’s comments about using the silent demonstration to protest police brutality.

Yiannopolous posted photos of police looking out over the plaza on rooftops.  The university claimed it spent $1 million for extra security for the forum.

He was supposed to speak at an official event at the college but it was cancelled by the the Berkeley Patriot organizers on Saturday.

Yiannopolous responded to the cancellation saying: ‘We are unable to hold an official UC Berkeley speaking event. So we’re going to host an unofficial one.’
