The first Moomin-themed amusement park and hotel outside of Finland – where the characters were created – is set to open in Japan this month.

Moomin Valley Park is located on a 18 acre plot of land in the city of Hanno, north of Tokyo, and it includes a number of attractions and a hotel.

Its creators worked with the official Moomin team from Finland to ensure it reflects author Tove Jansson’s original vision.

They even journeyed to Scandinavia to purchase goods for the theme park, including door handles and rugs, to give it an authentic feel.

Footage issued by the park shows how it’s gradually coming together ahead of its March 16 launch date.

The round blue Moomin House appears to be near completion and the website states that a guided tour of the property will cost 1,000 yen (£6.80).

Another attraction which is set to be popular is a treehouse area, complete with slides and rope bridges, inspired by the ‘Hemulen who loved silence’.

Meanwhile, the hotel looks ready to welcome guests, with Moomin plush toys and colourful artworks adorning each room.

Moomin Valley Park will be located next to a Nordic-centric attraction called Metsa Village, which opened last year.

This lake-side complex has a number of stores selling Scandinavian-inspired products and there is also a restaurant serving up Northern European cuisine and beer.

Tove Jansson’s Moomin books have sold in their millions, and been translated into 44 languages.

Jansson’s first Moomin book – The Moomins and the Great Flood – was published in 1945.

It is the story about Moominmamma’s and Moomintroll’s search for the missing Moominpappa and how they found their way to the Moominvalley.

Tove Jansson died in the summer of 2001, aged 87.

Since the Moomins and the Great Flood in 1945, more than 15 million Moomin books have been sold, around the world.

The Moomins has also been made into television series and films. The Finnish theme park, called Moomin World, is located in the south western town of Naantali.

Day tickets for Japan’s Moomin Valley Park will be priced at 1,500 yen (£10.20) for adults and 1,000 yen (£6.80) for children, with some attractions costing extra.
