Five ‘neglected’ children removed from squalid family home

Five ‘neglected’ young children have been taken from their filthy mice-infested home in Adelaide after police and welfare officers stormed on it Wednesday.

The children, aged between two months and nine years, were removed from the care of their young parents and are now with the Child Protection Department.

The couple who identify themselves as parents on social media – a man, 27, and a woman, 25 – were arrested and charged with five counts of neglect and five counts of failing to provide.

Five ‘neglected’ young children have been taken from their filthy mice-infested home in Hillcrest in Adelaide’s north east

Police and Child Protection Department officers attended the Hillcrest home about 1pm on Wednesday in a surprise out of concern for the childrens’ welfare.

The male faced Elizabeth Magistrates Court Wednesday but did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody to appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court in March.

The woman was granted bail and is due back in court on January 25.

Health inspectors and Housing SA workers, along with police detectives, first arrived at the property just before 12pm but no one was home.

The ‘mother’ reportedly left the property moments earlier after a visit from her mother, but returned later when detectives re-entered the home via help from a locksmith.

The exterior of the property didn’t give any hints to the filth brewing within the home’s walls, Adelaide Now reports.

It is understood mice ran had overrun bedrooms and wall cavities, while the stench was at times unbearable for officers, forcing them to step outside for fresh air.

There was a allegedly a significant build-up of rubbish and dirt in main living areas, particularly in the kitchen, with graffiti on the walls in almost every room.

Torn couches and stained mattresses were apparently hoarded in the carport, while tall piles of clothes and junk were stacked up against the boundary fence.

Access to the backyard was also obstructed by large amounts of toys and another mattress, as well as an abandoned pram and baby cot.
