Five injured – including a child – and more motorists trapped after horrific crash involving several cars and a grain truck on a Melbourne freeway – causing peak-hour chaos

A child is among five people who were injured in a horror smash on a busy freeway when a B-double truck and several cars collided.

Emergency crews and two air ambulance helicopters rushed the Diggers Rest scene on the Calder Freeway in Melbourne’s north west, just after 2.30pm on Monday.

At least two people are trapped in the wreckage with firefighters working frantically to cut them free as the incident causes traffic chaos during the peak-hour rush.

Aerial images show the large truck which was carrying grain, on its side with the commodity covering much of the road.

Debris from other cars is also strewn across the freeway including a vehicle that was towing a boat.

The collision occurred about 2.30pm when a B-double truck carrying grain struck three cars, including one towing a boat.   

Ambulance Victoria confirmed five motorists were injured including a child who was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital.  

‘A male patient was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital,’ Ambulance Victoria said.

‘One patient has been flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.’

VicTraffic has warned motorists to expect long delays with the freeway now closed and likely to be shut off for hours as police investigations get underway.

‘All citybound lanes of the Calder Freeway are closed at Bulla-Diggers Rest Road, due to a serious collision,’ a traffic alert said.

‘Drivers will exit and immediately re-enter the freeway via the exit and entry ramps. Follow the direction of @VictoriaPolice and allow extra time.’ 

Motorists trying to reach the reach the Tullamarine Freeway are being told to to use the detour at Gap Rd through Sunbury and then use Sunbury Rd through to Bulla.

Alternatively, drivers can also head south of freeway using Vineyard Rd, Plumpton Rd and the Melton Highway through to Taylors Lakes.
