There are grave fears for an elderly man and a five-year-old boy on Saturday evening, after their boat capsized in waters north of Wollongong.

The two remain unaccounted for after police received multiple emergency calls at about 6:20pm, alerting them to search the north end of Bulli Headland – 70km south of Sydney.

Emergency crews reported seeing the young boy on the hull of the capsized vessel but could not determine whether he was conscious, The Daily Telegraph reported.

‘The callers were reporting that multiple screams appeared to be coming off Bulli Headland from the rocks,’ a police spokesman said.

‘They heard the screaming for quite some time and then it went quiet.’

Photographs and video from the scene posted to social media show a helicopter and police search vessels scouring the area under darkness.

The rescue chopper located a large dark object in the water which they believe to be their boat.

Locals assisted the emergency operation and police have confirmed that two other men, who were also on board, were rescued and brought to shore.

‘Two men were pulled from the water by Toll Ambulance Rescue helicopter and have been taken to hospital,’ the spokesperson said.

‘The search is continuing for two others with assistance from Marine Area Command, Surf Lifesavers and Marine Rescue.’

But it is not clear whether the five-year-old boy is still alive.

The elderly man, who was still on the boat, is believed to have died.

Police say the search operation will continue into the night.
