Flight chaos at Melbourne Airport as low-lying cloud sees flights cancelled

Melbourne airport was plunged into chaos today as low cloud cancelled flights. 

Six Qantas flights and four Virgin flights were cancelled as other airlines suffered delays.  

Melbourne woke up to thick fog this morning, forcing air traffic control to reduce the number of flights coming in to land per hour.

A Qantas spokesman said: ‘Due to reduced visibility in Melbourne, six Qantas flights have been cancelled with all passengers re-accommodated on other services within two hours of their original departure time. 

A Virgin Australian spokesman said: ‘Low cloud in the vicinity of Melbourne Airport this afternoon is affecting all airlines operating in and out of the airport. 

‘We encourage guests travelling to or from Melbourne today to check our flight status page for the most up-to-date information.’

No Jetstar services were cancelled.
