Marseille winger Florian Thauvin has rendered the rest of the season pointless and branded the team ‘rubbish’ following their 2-0 defeat against Bordeaux.

The Ligue 1 side had been fighting for a Champions League spot but have now fell some way off the pace in the race for a top-three finish after Friday evening’s defeat.

Lyon, who occupy the last Champions League place, are now eight points ahead of rivals Marseille with a game in hand.

Thauvin has been a key figure for Marseille this season but has become increasingly frustrated after a string of poor results and the winger did not hold back in speaking his mind after Friday’s match.

‘I’m talking sh*t, I’m tired, but we’ve been poor this season,’ Thauvin told reporters.

‘It’s the same story every season. I’m fed up. For a top-three finish, it’s over. And even if we get into Champions League, what’s the point? We’re rubbish.’

Thauvin’s harsh words are expected to fuel speculation linking him with a move away from the club.

The 26-year-old is not short of admirers having been one of the standout performers in Ligue 1 this season, netting 13 times and assisting eight.

Marseille will hope to get back to winning ways after a run of three games without one when they host Nimes next Saturday.
