Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather’s biggest betting wins after taking $42,500 from Canelo Alvarez defeat

Boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather is rich, and he wants everyone to know it.

Appropriately nicknamed ‘Money’, Mayweather earned a staggering $1.1billion during his unbeaten career, and continues to rack up money in the ring to this day – though his fight with Don Moore on top of Dubai’s Burj Al Arab hotel has been postponed.

It’s not just in the ring where he likes to make his money, though. He has plenty of business ventures and it’s no secret that he likes to gamble – regularly sharing details of his mega winnings with fans on social media.

He recently revealed that he won $42,500 by betting on Dmitry Bivol to beat boxing’s pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez, describing the profitable night as an ‘easy pick up’ in a dig at the Mexican who he beat back in 2013.

Understandably, the 45-year-old is not so keen to show off his betting losses, and there have been reports that he lost as much as $50million in 2017.

Sportsmail takes a look into some of his biggest wins, as well as reported losses.

College basketball – $75,000

In April 2014, Mayweather was preparing for what ultimately would be his first win over Argentine welterweight Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas a month later.

He didn’t have to wait until then for a big victory, however, as he collected over $75,000 from an NCAA college basketball bet during the ‘March Madness’ tournament.

The then world welterweight champion tweeted a picture of winning betting slips following the Connecticut Huskies’ win over the Kentucky Wildcats.

Mayweather tweeted with the caption: ‘I bet on the underdogs @uconhuskies twice within the last three days. $75,636.’

NFL – $4.7million in a month

Mayweather had an astonishing run of form while betting on the NFL in September and October of 2014.

The world’s highest paid sportsman started off by banking $1,825,714.28 after successfully betting on both the Seattle Seahawks and Indianapolis Colts to win by more than 7.5 points.

Then he gambled $815,000 on the Denver Broncos to beat the New York Jets by more than 7.5 points, which resulted in him picking up a bumper $1.4million.

Just a week after the Broncos victory he staked another $800,000 on the Arizona Cardinals to beat the Oakland Raiders with a handicap of 3.5

The Cardinals also paid out for Mayweather with a 24-13 victory, meaning he collected just over $1.5million.

Naturally, the American took to Twitter to celebrate each of those successes for his millions of followers to see.

NBA and boxing four-day winning streak – $827,000

The following year he went on an incredible winning streak in which he won bets on four successive days in May 2015.

His impressive run started when he backed the Houston Rockets to win at the LA Clippers in Game 6 of the NBA Western Conference semi-finals which they came through 119-107.

He also took a punt on the Rockets +4.5 in the second-half spread in Game 7 of the same series.

Mayweather put on a second-half spread bet of +3.5 for the Atlanta Hawks in their Eastern Conference semi-final.

Finally, he put on a boxing bet for Gennady Golovkin’s fight with Willy Monroe Jr to go under 5.5 rounds.

Mayweather would have lost the $50,000 bet on that match if Monroe Jr had lasted another 46 seconds of the sixth round, which he could not continue.

In an Instagram message with proof of the four winnings, he wrote: ‘The last 4 days have been great. I’m getting paid while watching others entertain and perform. I don’t (do) anything for free. I bet $350,000 and walked away with $827,272.73.’

Doubling his money on the NBA – $400,000

Later that same month he doubled his money when he placed a $200,000 bet on the Golden State Warriors’ match against Houston Rockets in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals.

The eventual NBA champions that year, the Warriors, inspired by the duo nicknamed the ‘Splash Brothers’ in Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, defeated the Rockets 115-80 – with Mayweather collecting $400,000.

Alongside the image of the betting split, he wrote: ‘Splash for the cash. $200,000 in 48 minutes. @StephenCurry30 @KlayThompson.’

He celebrated the victory by taking a spontaneous trip to Seattle with his distant cousin Dejuan Blake on his private jet.

College football – $95,000

In October 2017, Mayweather placed a bet of $50,000 on Colorado State’s match against Hawaii and again picked up a mega win.

Mayweather was already coming off one of the biggest paydays of his career when he beat UFC superstar Conor McGregor.

He reportedly received around $280million from the fight with McGregor in August that year, which ended with Mayweather picking up a tenth round TKO victory.

Colorado eased past Hawaii with a 51-21 victory, with Mayweather collecting a total of $95,454.55.

Shock Lopez victory over Lomachenko – $20,000

Mayweather revealed in October 2020 that he won $20,000 after backing Teofimo Lopez to beat Vasyl Lomachenko for the world lightweight titles.

He captioned the photo of his winning betslip: ‘A light win’, after staking $6,500.

Lopez retained his IBF title and won the WBA, WBO and Ring titles with his stunning unanimous victory over Lomachenko.

The American went on to lose the titles in his next fight to George Bambosos in November 2021.

Betting on McGregor to lose – $85,000

As McGregor was humbled again by Dustin Poirier, Mayweather was making more money after betting $50,000 on the American to beat his old rival.

The Irishman suffered back-to-back losses for the first time in his career, forced to concede the bout after a gruesome leg-break in the dying seconds of round one.

McGregor and Mayweather still have a grudge to this day, and the unbeaten boxer took particular delight from the UFC superstar’s defeat.

Mayweather showed off his betting slip in which he collected $85,714.30 on Twitter, writing: ‘@dustinpoirier, thanks for getting me paid!’

The victorious fighter responded: ‘I got you champ’, while McGregor mocked Mayweather’s profit as he wrote ’35k’ with a pair of laughing emojis.

Mayweather’s reported losses

However, it’s not all been wins for the 45-year-old, who is set to fight on top of the Burj Al Arab in Dubai on May 14 against Don Moore.

He missed out on a $190,000 profit as he had intended to stick a $383,000 bet on himself to beat McGregor in 2017.

Mayweather walked away ‘p***ed’ after being made to wait due to legal concerns surrounding the bet.

Though he has never made any of his betting losses public, it was reported by Maxim that he gambled away $50million in 2017.

There had been talks in 2018 for Mayweather to have a rematch with Manny Pacquiao.

In a since deleted Instagram post, he wrote: ‘I’m coming back to fight Manny Pacquiao this year. Another 9 figure pay day on the way.’

The Maxim report states that Mayweather was ‘motivated’ for the fight to happen to recoup the $50m losses.

McGregor blasted Mayweather for having a ‘big time gambling problem’ as they faced off ahead of their summer 2017 bout.

The Irishman said: ‘He needs to let that gambling go – he’s a bit heavy on that gambling. He’s always talking about doing it and then not doing it.

‘I certainly know he has a big-time gambling problem, from seeing him. He gambles on half-times and things like that.

‘He shows what his wins are, never shows what the losses are. Maybe that’s why he’s in the position he’s in and he had to take this fight. I’m focused on the fight, not gambling.’

Former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen claimed in 2018 that Mayweather was ‘broke’, while Khabib Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz told TMZ that Mayweather was ‘begging’ to box the former UFC champion because he was ‘running out of money’.

Despite any losses he might have suffered, Mayweather looks far from a man that’s struggling with money as he continues to flaunt his impressive jewellery collection, and luxury cars estimated at $27m. He also expanded his multi-million property portfolio just last year with an $18m Miami mansion.

With a net worth of reportedly $450m, Mayweather can afford to keep gambling.
