A popular foodie has revealed how she uses food scraps to keep her dishwasher smelling fresh.

Ayeh Far, who runs the Cooking with Ayeh Instagram account, puts a wedge of lemon in her dishwasher to help keep her dishes fresh.

The home cook usually shares recipe videos on the picture and video sharing platform, but that didn’t stop her recent hack from going viral.

‘Use your tablet as usual, then just place the finished lemon piece or half inside with your dirty dishes,’ she said alongside the video.

The piece of lemon can be whole or the scraps left over from juicing the fruit.

‘Just make sure to take out any seeds first,’ she said.

The video has been seen by more than 140k people with hundreds commenting to say they would be trying the handy trick.

While some already have, backing up the hack.

‘I always do this and I love how my dishwasher smells feels and my dishes are so shiny,’ one mum said.

But some people were concerned ‘little bits of lemon’ would be spread through the machine.

‘I thought so too, but it doesn’t,’ Ayeh replied.

Others shared their own tips for left over lemon.

‘You can also do the same to make your microwave smell nice, I use leftover lime and microwave it for a minute or two. Smells divine,’ one woman said.

‘I put 1/2 a lemon in the kettle then boil. It does a great job cleaning it,’ another said.

‘I usually run our used lemon pieces thru the garbage disposal. Also for the nice citrus scent,’ one woman admitted.

Ayeh recently reached the 400k follower milestone. She is well-known for her easy-to-follow recipes and coffee hacks.
