‘For the survivors’: Simone Biles wears teal outfit in support of fellow Larry Nassar victims as she sweeps US National Gymnastics Championships

  • Simone Biles won her fifth all-around title at the US Gymnastics Championships
  • The 21-year-old sported a teal leotard for her floor exercise routine on Sunday
  • Biles’ outfit was in support of the victims of former US team doctor Larry Nassar
  • The light shade of teal is the designated colour for the survivors of sexual abuse

Simone Biles demonstrated her support for the fellow victims of former US gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar during her routine on Sunday.

Biles became the first woman to win five titles at the US National Gymnastics Championships on Sunday as continued to dominate on her comeback to the sport.

And during her performance in Boston Biles opted to wear a leotard coloured in a special shade of teal, the designated colour for survivors of sexual abuse.

‘[The colour] is for the survivors,’ Biles said after her record-breaking performance. ‘I stand with all of them and I think it’s kind of special to unite [people].’

Biles was one of over 100 women who have started publicly that they were victims of abuse by Nassar, who was sentenced at least 60 years in prison in December.

Disgraced doctor Nassar was found guilty of molesting young athletes during his time as team doctor for the US gymnastics team.

The 55-year-old has been moved to Oklahoma Federal Transfer Center from his original penitentiary in Tucson, Arizona after being assaulted by fellow prisoners.

Biles meanwhile, who won four gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics, took the all-round title by 6.55 points over reigning world champion Morgan Hurd in Boston.

She spent over a year away from the sport in the wake of her success in Rio, returning at the US Classic last month. She has indicated her desire to retire after defending her titles at Tokyo 2020.

Biles said on her display: ‘I knew I’d be capable of scoring well, but I thought I was going to be a nervous wreck and maybe fall apart.

‘Going into these events, I know I kept telling my family I don’t know if I’m going to calm myself down the way I did before and handle the nerves, but so far, so good.’
