Former AFL star jailed for two years after robbing two homes and stealing a car while high on ice

Former AFL star completes a spectacular fall from grace as he’s jailed over two home burglaries and stealing a car while high on ice

  • Former AFL draft pick Dayle Garlett has spent the last seven months in custody
  • Was on parole when he broke into two Perth homes and stole a car while on ice
  • Crimes committed just months he was released from jail after almost four years
  • Pleaded guilty to most recent charges and was sentenced to more time in jail

A one time promising AFL star is back behind bars after going on a drug-fuelled crime spree while on parole.

Former Hawthorn Hawks draft pick Dayle Garlett, 25, was sentenced to two years and nine months jail after he pleaded guilty to two home burglaries and stealing a car within two days in Perth earlier this year.

The District Court heard Garlett stole a mobile phone, wallet, and car keys when he broke in to a Noranda home on April 30 before taking off in a Toyota Orion parked in the driveway.

He broke into another Noranda home two days later to steal handbags and jewellery worth $5500 before disturbed mid-burglary by the occupants.

Garlett was later arrested in Lightning Park and has been in custody since.

His lawyer told the court this week Garlett had been under the influence of the drug ice ice at the time of the offences and was in a dark place following the deaths of his cousin and grandfather in quick succession, The West Australian reported.

His lawyer added Garlett has spent the last seven months in custody reflecting on his previous brushes with the law and took full responsibility for his choices.

‘He’s come to terms now with the fact that he may not play football professionally ever again but he can still derive some enjoyment from it and use those skills and experiences to help the next generation,’ his lawyer told the court.

Garlett has been on parole after he was released from jail in January after almost four years behind bars.

He was jailed in 2015 after he pleaded guilty to a string of charges from a three-month crime spree that included stealing vehicles, aggravated burglary and evading police in a pursuit.

The crime spree included a dangerous stunt while behind the wheel which he filmed and posted on social media, where he drove at speeds of up to 200km/h, narrowly missing oncoming traffic.

Judge John Staude had a stern warning for Garlett when sentencing him this week.

‘If you don’t make the changes that have been identified and which you acknowledge you need to make, then the likelihood is that you will continue to spend time in prison indefinitely,’ the judge told Garlett.

Once touted as one of the best young players to come out of WA, Garlett, then 19, was picked up by the Hawthorn Hawks in the 2013 national draft.

Garlett quit the club a few months later without playing a senior game, saying he was struggling to cope with the overwhelming demands of AFL.

He returned to his home state Western Australia, where his former WAFL club Swan Districts voted not to take him back, saying it was ‘concerned for the welfare of the troubled former Hawthorn draftee’.
