Former Home and Away star Danny Raco was convicted on Thursday for drink-driving on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Danny, who is now a director on the long-running soap, pleaded guilty in Manly Local Court to driving with a blood alcohol reading of 0.082, The Daily Telegraph reports.

The 39-year-old, who rose to fame playing Alex Poulous on the show, was fined $500 and disqualified from driving for three months.

Danny was stopped for a random breath test at Brookvale at 11.30pm on May 21 this year, when he blew over the 0.05 blood alcohol limit for driving.

The former TV star was heading home to North Narrabeen, after attending The Oaks Hotel at Neutral Bay on Sydney’s North Shore. 

As reported by The Daily Telegraph on Saturday, Danny told police at Dee Why police station that he had downed a cocktail at 5.30pm and then two glasses of red wine at The Oaks before driving towards home.

In a written apology to Magistrate Mark Richardson in court, the actor/director said he was ashamed of his actions.

‘This has caused me great shame as I come to terms with the gravity of my mistake and the devastation my actions could have caused both to me and other members of the public who were travelling on the road that evening,’ he wrote.

The Daily Telegraph also reports that Danny said his friends and family were ‘disappointed’ with him and that the conviction could affect his ability to work as a director in the US and Canada. 

Home and Away star Shane Withington, reportedly provided a character reference for Danny.

Danny, who was born in Rome, Italy, forged a successful acting career in TV on shows including Home and Away, Heartbreak High, and Blue Heelers.

While on Home and Away, he had romances with co-stars Tammin Sursok, 35, and Ada Nicodemou, 42.

He has directed more than 100 episodes of Home and Away.
