Former Kings School student in bubble tea rampage

The husband of a beautician who destroyed a novelty birthday cake at a shop because her bubble tea was not sweet enough has been fined for his role in the fracas.

Fayez Mohammad Saadie caused damage totalling $896 when he leapt to the defence of his then fiancee Tiara Suryana at the Gong Cha bubble tea shop in Sydney, pushing over a computer monitor and breaking two coffee mugs.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty in Downing Centre Local Court to destroying or damaging property at the inner-city shop after his partner asked for a third extra serving of syrup in her drink on May 27.

Fayez and Suryana had been having lunch in the city with two family members to discuss their looming wedding before they visited the shop.

Suryana ordered a bubble tea with extra sweetener but was not satisfied with the drink and sent her mother back for more.

Staff member Chien-Liang Liu added more syrup but 25-year-old Suryana was still not satisfied.

She returned to the shop and accused Mr Liu of making her drink ‘wrong’.

Mr Liu said he had already added two lots of extra syrup and would not be adding more.

Suryana then became argumentative and demanded a refund, according to a statement of facts tendered to the court.

At the time Mr Liu was holding a novelty bikini birthday cake worth $120.

‘The accused pushed the bottom of the cake box out of Liu’s hands causing it to flip and smash on the ground,’ the statement of facts said.

‘Liu stated “What are you doing?” And grabbed the accused by her clothing around her shoulders in an attempt to keep her in the store to pay for the cake.

‘At this time the accused threw her drink at him.’

Fayez, a former student at the elite King’s School, saw the confrontation and lunged at Mr Liu.

Fayez became involved in a physical altercation with Mr Liu, pushing over a computer monitor and breaking two coffee mugs.

After the fracas Fayez left the shop but soon returned and pulled down a roller blind.

The court heard on Wednesday Fayez was remorseful for his actions and was prepared to pay for the damage he caused.

However chief magistrate Graeme Henson said the matter was not a ‘minor incident’ and the offence carried a jail term of five years.

He stopped Fayez’s lawyer while he was detailing his client’s educational history saying ‘This is not an episode of This is Your Life.’

Judge Henson noted Fayez’s actions ‘may well have been impulsive within the emotion of the moment’ but he had ‘every opportunity’ to leave the premises without causing trouble.

‘The community is sick and tired of people imposing themselves on other people’s property and their person because they feel like it,’ Judge Henson said.

‘What is it with modern society that people don’t simply go on their way?’

Judge Henson convicted and fined Fayez $1000 and ordered him to pay $896 for the damage he caused.
