A former Miss Universe Australia is among horse owners ‘furious’ their pets were left to rot and be eaten by animals despite paying hundreds of dollars for a burial.

The Macedon Ranges Shire Council in Victoria has been investigating the disposal of 100 horses after receiving a complaint they were being eaten by foxes on a property north of Romsey, the Herald Sun reported.

Michelle Downes, who is a Miss Australia and former wife of motor racing legend Peter Brock, paid $250 for her horse Dell to be buried under a tree.

But she was furious to find out she had been mislead by the local landowner.

‘I was furious because it was my understanding my horse would be buried. I didn’t want him to go to the knackery to be cut up for dog meat. I was told he would be given a dignified burial,’ she told the Herald Sun.

‘All these years I thought he was in a nice spot in a paddock under a tree, it is devastating, it’s was awful to think someone would mislead you.’

It’s been reported that the landowner had an arrangement with a local veterinarian to dispose the euthanised horses.

Another horse owner, Jahnae Parrish, was tearful to learn her horse could have been left in the paddock instead of buried.

Macedon Shire Ranges Council spokeswoman Leanne Morton said the council was investigating whether a planning permit is required for the current use of the property by the landowner.

Ms Morton said conversations with the landowner was continuing.

‘While RSPCA Victoria and Racing Victoria were initially involved, they are no longer a party to the ongoing investigation,’ he said.
