Former prime minister Kevin Rudd has returned as the self-proclaimed ‘handball king’ while competing against high school children in the playground.

Mr Rudd took to the court at Christian Brothers Lewisham, in Sydney’s inner west, on Monday while visiting the school for National Apology Week.

The former Labor leader said the competition was ‘tough’ but he was up for the challenge.

‘It’s the return of the Handball King today at Christian Brothers,’ he wrote on social media.

‘I survived some mean Dog Shots to still prevail.’

Video footage showed Mr Rudd appear to stretch his arms before serving a shot to his younger opponents.

Christian Brothers students sat on the concrete lining the court as the former prime minister returned the ball to the students.

Mr Rudd was victorious when one of the students over-played his shot and it bounced outside the square.

The crowd erupted in cheers and Mr Rudd celebrated by giving his audience high-fives.

‘Good on you Kevin. Nothing like a bit of fun,’ one viewer wrote.

‘Ruddy is just so darn likeable. I appreciate the balance between being well-spoken, and a dorky Dad. You rock dude,’ wrote another.

A third added: ‘If I were a politician all I would do is tour the country challenging high school students to games of handball.’

The ‘handball king’ often shares his love of schoolyard game on social media, competing with students while visiting schools across the country.

Last year, Mr Rudd announced he would be ready for handball matches at the end of August 2019, after recovering from knee surgery.

‘So any of you guys who are looking for a handball championship game, I’m available. Let me office know through direct message,’ he said from his office at the time.

‘Be very good and get ready to die.’
