Former Prime Minister Bob Hawke has been rushed to the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. 

It is unclear at this point why the 88-year-old former prime minister of Australia was taken for treatment.

Described as the most popular prime minister, Mr Hawke was the 23rd prime minister of Australia.

He served from 1983 until 1991, leading the Australian Labor Party to four consecutive electoral victories. 

His major achievements in office include the creation of Medicare, the formation of APEC, and the initiation of national super, Nine News reported. 

Mr Hawke, who once held the world record for the fastest drinking of beer (pictured), was reportedly anxious to get home to do 'crosswords' and have a 'cigar'

He drank 1.4 litres in just 11 seconds. 

In addition to formerly holding the record for the fastest drinking of beer, he also launched his own range of Australian beer company called Hawke’s Brewing Co.   

Mr Hawke celebrated his 88th birthday, in December last year.
