Former The Project star Charlie Pickering makes VERY blunt statement about his time on the struggling current affairs show

Charlie Pickering has confessed that he’s never been invited back on The Project after quitting almost a decade ago.

Speaking to this week’s issue of Stellar Magazine, the 45-year-old said bluntly, ‘They’ve not asked, and I don’t think I would’.

Pickering abruptly quit the Channel 10 show to join the ABC in 2014 because he felt working for the commercial network compromised his moral values.

The comedian however did have some kind words to say about the struggling current affairs show.

‘I will say it’s a great show, and it’s been a wonderful opportunity for some really smart, funny people to make some great TV,’ he told the publication.

As for the recent mass exodus of the show’s biggest stars, Charlie said, ‘It’s natural that people are going to want to seek other opportunities.’

Pickering also believes that the program can survive recent line up changes and flagging ratings.

‘The Today show has been going for however long and had so many changes of hosts,’ he said.

New stars Sam Taunton and Michael Hing have joined The Project for 2023, alongside Sarah and existing panelists Waleed Aly and Hamish Macdonald.

Georgie Tunny, who has already been a regular fixture on the current affairs show, also appears on the new season.

It follows the mass departure of stars Carrie Bickmore, Lisa Wilkinson and Peter Helliar from the troubled series last year.

Tommy Little was also quietly removed as a regular panellist but will appear on the show sporadically.

Pickering meanwhile helms a new breakfast program on ABC Radio every Friday from 5.30 am to 8.00 am.

In 2015 he began hosting his own TV show, The Weekly with Charlie Pickering, as well as the annual special The Yearly with Charlie Pickering.
