Fortnite to hold 100-player Pro-Am at E3

Details about a much-anticipated Fortnite tournament at this year’s E3 convention have finally been revealed.

A planned tournament featuring a number of notable celebrity fans of the hit video game, long in the works, has been unveiled as a 100-player Pro-Am tournament featuring 50 celebrities paired up with 50 professional gamers.

According to Variety, the victorious duo will ultimately compete for some $3 million (£2.2 million) in prize money they’ll donate to a charitable cause of their choice. 

Notably, the prize money is considered separate from the whopping $100 million (£75 million) in prize money for a planned Fortnite esports league in the works.

The upcoming tournament will be streamed live on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Twitch beginning at 6:30pm EST on June 12, 2018. Tickets, of which 3,000 will reportedly be available, will cost $10 (£7.49) and be distributed through an email link to players in the Los Angeles region.

An impressive lineup of celebrities and professional gamers alike has been assembled for the upcoming event. Notable celebrities participating include EDM DJ Marshmello, NBA star Paul George, UFC fighter Demetrious Johnson and actor Joel McHale while participating pro gamers will include Myth, Markiplier and Ninja, known for its record-breaking live streamed match with Drake in March. 

Additional celebrities and professional gamers are expected to be announced in the coming days.

The tournament comes as Fortnite plans to professionalize rapidly and become more competitive on an individual basis. 

A record-shattering $100 million (£75 million) in prize money was recently announced by Epic Games for a planned professional tournament set to take place in the near future. In addition, the game recently unveiled a new Solo Showdown ranking mode, allowing players to play against each other and determine their competitive rankings.

In addition, an invite-only Party Royale event will be held on June 12 to thank Fortnite gamers and partners. Fans 18 and older interested in the event should visit the Fortnite booth during the E3 convention for a chance to win tickets. 

What is Fortnite?

Fortnite is a free-to-play action-shooter video game developed by Epic Games. The game has proven to be phenomenally popular as of late, currently boasting over 45 million players worldwide and growing.

The game’s objective is to be the sole survivor in a 100-player battle royale deathmatch that also incorporates elements of fortress building and interactive environments. The game is currently available to player on iOS, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Mac OS and Microsoft Windows. An Android version of the hit videogame is also under development.

What is E3?

E3 is a popular trade event and convention for the video game and PC game industry.

The event has been held annually since 1995 typically in the Los Angeles area and is presented by the Entertainment Software Association. 

The trade show is often used by video game developers and publishers to announce and showcase their upcoming material. 

Formerly an invite-only event, the 2017 E3 convention was the first ever to be opened up to the general public, with 15,000 passes being available and some 68,400 people reportedly in attendance.

Where is E3 2018?

The 2018 E3 convention will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California. The event was originally held there in 1995 and 1996 and again from 1999 to 2006. Since 2008, the event has also been held at the convention center.

When is E3 2018?

E3 2018 will take place from June 12 to June 14. Notable presenters scheduled for the upcoming convention include Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Bethesda Softworks, Nintendo, Ubisoft and others.
