Four people are rushed to hospital after a van hits a light pole and flips – as the man behind the wheel is charged with negligent driving

  • Emergency services were called to Auburn in western Sydney after a van crash  
  • At 4am on Sunday, the van hit a light pole with such force it snapped  
  • The 47-year-old driver has been charged with four offences over the crash 

Four people have been rushed to hospital after a van hit a light pole and flipped in western Sydney on Sunday morning, trapping one passenger inside.

Shortly before 4am, the van slammed into the pole on South Parade, in Auburn, with such force that it snapped in half as the vehicle flipped onto its side.

The driver and four passengers were able to free themselves, however, police had to smash a window to release a fifth passenger.

The four injured people were taken by paramedics to Westmead Hospital for assessment.

The driver, a 47-year-old man from South Granville, allegedly returned a positive roadside breath test, police said.

He was arrested and taken to Auburn Police Station, where it is alleged he refused to undergo another breath analysis.

Police charged him with negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm), refuse or fail to submit to breath analysis, drive with unrestrained passenger, licence expired two years or more.

The man was granted conditional bail and will appear in Burwood Local Court on April 18.
