France defender Raphael Varane ‘wants to join Manchester United from Real Madrid this summer’

Raphael Varane ‘wants to join Manchester United this summer with Real Madrid star keen on seeking new challenge… but France defender’s £400,000-a-week wage demands could be a stumbling block’

  • Manchester United were exploring a summer deal for Raphael Varane in April
  • The defender reportedly wants to leave Real Madrid after turning down new deal
  • United believe he fits the profile to play alongside club captain Harry Maguire
  • Varane only has a year left on contract after this summer but is valued at £60m

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is keen on joining Manchester United this summer, according to reports.

In April, Sportsmail revealed United were exploring a summer deal for the 28-year-old centre-back after being given encouragement that he was ready to leave the Spanish giants at the end of the season.

The Independent now claim the France international wants to depart the Santiago Bernabeu after a decade in Madrid, and believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men can offer him new experience in his career that he is seeking.

The Athletic also reported earlier this week that he has rejected an offer of a two-year extension to his contract, leaving Madrid increasingly resigned to losing him this summer.

However, the report in The Independent adds that Varane is pushing to earn as much as £400,000 a week if he joins the Old Trafford club, a demand that is considered just one of many stumbling blocks in any potential deal.

Varane only has one year left on contract after this summer, but is still valued in the region of £60million by Madrid, who will need to raise funds for their own rebuilding.

United are mindful of paying what they consider inflated prices and wages in the current climate, which has so far seen them reluctant to meet the £68million buy-out clause in Sevilla star Jules Kounde’s contract.

The club nevertheless insist centre-back is a priority position to address this summer, and the same outlet adds United chiefs see the attraction of doing bringing in a world-class centre-half in his prime.

Sportsmail revealed in April there could be competition from Paris Saint-Germain, the club Varane followed as a boy, but the report claims he prefers a move to the Premier League.

And there is a growing recognition within United that Varane fits the profile of defender they need to play alongside Harry Maguire.

United have discussed a number of targets, mindful they are working within a restricted budget and want a forward and cover at right-back too in the form of Jadon Sancho and Kieran Trippier.

Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres and Sevilla star Jules Kounde have also been considered

Villarreal’s Pau Torres is talented but still raw while Varane’s compatriot Kounde is regarded as a defender of huge potential but there are reservations over whether he has the best physical attributes to compete in the Premier League.

Ibrahima Konate was also considered before he joined Liverpool, while Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic has also been offered in the past.

Varane has won 18 trophies in a trophy-laden decade at Madrid to go with the World Cup win with France three years ago.

United may now firm up their interest but it is not the first time they have tried to lure Varane to Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to sign him for United from Lens in 2011 but then Madrid adviser Zinedine Zidane convinced Varane to move to Spain instead.

United made approaches again in 2017 but were rebuffed and brought in Victor Lindelof from Benfica.
