Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has insisted that he won’t get carried away after his side briefly went top of the Premier League table on Saturday.

An own goal from Federico Fernandez and a strike from Tammy Abraham saw Chelsea move to the top of the table before Tottenham overtook them with their win over Manchester City.

After their win at St James’ Park, Lampard stressed the importance of remaining humble and stated that the battle to win the Premier League this season will be an intense one.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game Lampard said: ‘It’s not an easy game. We played well in patches and the result is key in these games.

‘The Premier League is tough, relentless, and we dealt with the challenge of the game very well.

‘I won’t get excited about being top of the table for five minutes. It’s important to be humble and know it’s a long race.’

Chelsea have now won three Premier League games in succession and have played some impressive football at times, with Lampard’s side containing much in the way of dynamism. They have also gone seven league games unbeaten.

Many of Chelsea’s new signings have made a considerable impact, with Edouard Mendy, for instance, having settled in well in goal, while left-back Ben Chilwell is dependable defensively and also provided a threat going forwards.

Hakim Ziyech creates chances with regularity while Timo Werner makes intelligent runs, and the likes of Kai Havertz and Thiago Silva, who weren’t involved on Saturday, are also capable of making a major impact.

Lampard has a very talented squad at his disposal, with Chelsea possessing much quality in various positions, although, as he acknowledges, it is perhaps too early to be discussing whether they will win the Premier League.

Next weekend Chelsea host Tottenham in what will be a significant test, while Liverpool will be determined to defend their title and Manchester City certainly cannot be ruled out of contention.
