Frankston Melbourne assault: Police charge man over one-punch attack

A cowardly tradesman who knocked out a stranger passing him on the footpath has been charged with assault by police after a brief manhunt.

The man’s brother, who was caught on CCTV cruelly laughing as the victim lay semi-conscious on the ground, was questioned but released without charge.

The unprovoked assault took place on Thursday night in Melbourne’s south-east, with Victoria Police releasing footage of the sickening attack on the weekend.

Security vision overlooking the path, next to Nepean Highway in Frankston, captures three men wearing hi-visibility clothing walking together at about 7.45pm.

The alleged attacker and his laughing brother went into hiding, but handed themselves into police on Monday morning following widespread media coverage.

The alleged attacker, a 32-year-old Frankston South man, was charged with intentionally causing injury and will face court today.

His brother was released pending further inquiries.

Witnesses say they followed a trail of blood to the victim, but he refused their help and fled the scene.

Police confirmed the victim was a 43-year-old Frankston North man, but did not reveal his identity.

The man, who was wearing a hooded jumper at the time and is not believed to have known the group of men, left his broken dentures at the scene of the attack.

Police believe he would have suffered serious facial injuries as a result of the assault.

‘A disgusting and vicious attack, very unprovoked, which was not called for,’ Victoria Police Senior Constable Joel Barbera said.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
