Fred and Rose West’s ex-lodger says she heard children screaming ‘stop it daddy’ in middle of night

An ex-lodger of Fred and Rose West has told how she heard children screaming ‘stop it daddy’ in the middle of the night.

Jayne Hamer stayed with the notorious serial killers at their ‘House of Horrors’, where the couple killed nine of their victims including their own daughter Heather.

The new ITV documentary finally aired last night after it was unexpectedly pulled from the schedule at the last minute in January due to unspecified legal reasons.

Speaking for the first time, Ms Hamer shed light on the bizarre going-ons that occurred behind closed doors and how she felt compelled to escape.

She revealed to presenter Trevor McDonald how she decided to get out of the Gloucester home while she still could as she believed that she ‘was next’.

She added: ‘I heard screaming in the middle of the night “stop it daddy, stop it daddy” and it sounded like one of the children.

‘That was my reason for leaving. I thought I was next.’

Ms Hamer revealed how Fred had once taken her down to the cellar of 25 Cromwell Street, where the majority of the killings are thought to have been carried out.

‘There was a little bed there and I thought it was for the children,’ she said. ‘I found out years later it wasn’t.’

The Wests, who lived at the house from 1972 until their arrests in 1994, regularly took on lodgers in the property, which was also home to ten of their children.

To supplement their income, Rose would solicit to both men and women in one of the upstairs bedrooms, while Fred would watch through peep holes.

Ms Hamer said: ‘Fred was the ultimate voyeur, he liked to hide in the cupboard with a camera. I got to know Fred fairly well.

‘Rosemary was harder to get on with, very domineering, very curt; she seemed like a very controlling person. She definitely ruled the roost.

‘When I look back now I wonder why I was babysitting the children, what were Fred and Rosemary doing? Maybe they were going out finding victims?’

The sister of one of the young women raped and murdered by the Wests also spoke to McDonald as she relived her journey up to Cromwell Street.

Juanita Mott’s sister Belinda said she went to the house to try and track down her missing sibling, unaware she had been buried under the staircase.

She added: “I had a friend, she rented one of the rooms upstairs, Rose West would be sat on the doorstep with the kids.

‘It was just a dump, it was horrible, I didn’t like it. ‘I said to my friend “how can you live there?” Little did I knew that Juantia was under the staircase; it was just eerie.’

Despite much fanfare surrounding the airing of the documentary, many viewers expressed their dismay at the lack of new details emerging from the episode.

Sara Ebrahimi wrote on Twitter: ‘All the hype about the #fredandrosewest doc… other than TrevorMCDonaldd it’s almost identical to one channel 5 aired 2 weeks ago.’

User @xCountMeInx added: ‘That was an hour I’ll never get back. I thought he was actually going to interview #rosewest.

‘All this has been documented numerous times before.’

Rose West was convicted of 10 murders in 1995 and remains behind bars in County Durham after it was ordered she would spend the rest of her life in prison.

Fred West killed himself at Winson Green prison in Birmingham in January 1995 while awaiting trial.
