Fred Sirieix shares excitement after daughter Andrea, 13, qualified for Team GB’s diving squad

Fred Sirieix has shared his excitement after his teenage daughter was selected for the Team GB diving squad at the Tokyo Olympics.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain today, the French First Dates star, 49, who lives with his partner and their two children in Peckham, said he’s ‘so proud’ of 16-year-old Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix.

He added that it’s ‘sad’ nobody can go with her to the games, where his daughter is looking to win a medal in the 10 metre platform event.

‘We’re so proud of her, she’s working so hard and it’s only 31 days now until the start of the Olympics. The sad thing is nobody can go with her because there’s no spectators allowed,’ he told hosts Susanna Reid and Adil Ray.

‘I would [be there], last year when the Olympics were supposed to take place I had all my time booked, and then it was cancelled and postponed to this year, I already of course had my time off, everybody’s got their time off to go and support Andrea, but sadly nobody’s allowed.

‘I think it’s for the best, at the end of the day it’s more about the athletes and for them to compete in the sports that they’ve chosen and for them to excel, I think it’s amazing that they are about to do that.’

Fred added that only a month-and-a-half ago Andrea was competing at the World Cup in Japan with Team GB, and the team then travelled straight to Budapest for the European Championships where they ‘did very well’ – and Andrea took home a silver medal.

‘It was a great preparation, and now it’s 30 days to the big day for the Olympics, it’s a dream come true for them,’ he said.

Watching a video of his daughter performing an impressive dive during the segment, he exclaimed: ‘Look at that dive! I’m going to be bias but that’s a 10.’

Andrea, who is the youngest member of the 12-person Tokyo Team GB squad, previously told how her maitre d’ father is ‘really encouraging’.

‘My family do everything for me,’ she admitted. ‘I watch First Dates from time to time, I think it’s quite funny. But when my school friends say, “Oh my gosh, your dad is a celebrity’, I go, “Oh no he’s not, he’s just my dad”.

‘My dad and I have different fields – he is on TV and I jump off a diving board. My dad tried it and he can tell you it’s not the easiest thing to do!

‘I want to show and I want to broadcast to everyone that I want to be the best. The dream for every athlete is an Olympic medal. I’m so excited for this experience.’

Relative veteran Daley will be competing in his fourth Games in Tokyo and is going in search of an elusive gold medal in the 10m platform and 10m synchro, where he will partner debutant Matty Lee.

Fred appeared on the ITV morning show to discuss his new campaign ‘Behind the lens by Pixel’, which aims to encourage people to get out walking and reconnect with nature – and themselves.

‘I did so much walking in lockdown and I’ve discovered things that I didn’t know existed in my local area,’ Fred explained.

‘I went to Peckham Rye park a few months ago and discovered there are beehives there, and there’s a lovely lady who looks after the bees that got me to try the honey. I didn’t know there were people producing honey in Peckham, it’s delicious!

‘Lockdown has been so boring, there are some days there’s nothing to do you just want to stay in bed and wait until the next day.’
