Free agent pitcher Rich Hill and his wife Caitlin were arrested prior to Saturday’s New England Patriots-Buffalo Bills game in Foxborough, Massachusetts following an altercation with Gillette Stadium security.

Hill was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest when he attempted to intervene as police arrested his wife, who had repeatedly tried to enter Gillette Stadium with an oversized bag and ultimately refused to leave the grounds, according to Boston.com.

Due to security concerns, stadiums often prohibit the use of large bags.

‘She was trying to enter the stadium with an oversized bag and she had been told several times, “no,” said Foxborough police chief administrator Robert Bolger. ‘She tried several times to go to a different gate. She was ordered to leave the property.’

She was ultimately charged with disorderly conduct and trespassing.

Rich, who pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, and Caitlin Hill were arraigned Monday in Wrentham (Massachusetts) District Court. A charge of intimidation of police/witness was dismissed against Hill, and the couple was fined $500 apiece.

Hill, a native of Massachusetts who previously played for the Boston Red Sox, reportedly tried to intercede when police were putting Caitlin in a police cruiser.

Recently Hill received the Tony Conigliaro award, which goes to the major leaguer who ‘who has overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination and courage that were the trademarks of [Red Sox legend] Tony C.’

‘I’m really humbled and honored by this award and honestly a little thrown by it,’ Hill said. ‘Having grown up here, I am very familiar with Tony C.’s story, so this means a lot to me and my family.’

Hill, 39, worked his way back three times from an arm and two knee injuries to finish the season with the Dodgers, starting Game 4 of the NLDS against the Washington Nationals.

Conigliaro was a Boston-area native who was the youngest player to lead a league in homers, hitting 32 in 1965, his second full season. He was hit in the face by a pitch on August 18, 1967, fracturing his cheekbone, dislocating his jaw and damaging the retina in his left eye. He returned after missing all of 1968 to play two more seasons, but retired due to declining vision in 1971.

He died in 1982 at the age of 45. The award in his name has been given out by Major League Baseball since 1990. It will be presented on January 16 at the 81st annual Boston Baseball Writers’ dinner.
