Free houses being placed on Brisbane market in new trend

An emerging property trend is seeing a growing amount of homes being placed on the market for free.

Home owners in Brisbane are listing houses on Gumtree for prospective buyers to snap up without even reaching for a five dollar note.

But the remarkable deal comes with a catch – ‘buyers’ must remove the houses from the land they’re on at their own cost and find somewhere else to place them.

A three-bedroom, two-bathroom house in the affluent inner-city suburb of Paddington is one home being given away.

The well-maintained home boasts a ‘country-feel’ with its bullnose verandas, wooden decking and ornate balustrades.

Inside is a modern, open-plan kitchen and living area, a study and downstairs office.

Meanwhile, another relocatable three-bedroom house is also available free of charge in Taigum, Brisbane’s north.

But despite being free, relocating houses can be a long and expensive process involving consultations with building certifiers, engineers and council officers, 7 News reported.

Disconnecting and removing a house can cost up to $30,000, while cleaning up the site it was on can cost a further $10,000.

Restumping the house costs between $10,000 and $25,000, before another $10,000 for building certification needs to be paid.

In total, the process of relocating a home can take four months and cost $75,000, before any land itself is purchased.

‘Once you get the house to the block, then you’ve got your reconnecting of your services,’ Mackay and Sons House Removal’s Ashleigh Mackay told the network.

‘If you were to purchase a house off us, for example, we would literally take care of doing all that for you.’
