A French tourist has been rescued from a famous Sydney beach with a shattered leg after he was swept onto the rocks.

Police were called to Bronte Beach, in the city’s eastern suburbs, about 1.45am on Thursday after a woman heard a man screaming for help about 50 metres offshore.

The 38-year-old French tourist – who was ten days into his holiday down under – was then seen on the rocks below the cliff.

Officers climbed down to help the man, who had suffered fractures to his left leg and cuts to his right leg after dragging himself out of the water and to the rocks.

The tourist was moved about three metres up the rock shelf in a bid to escape the waves rolling in.

He was then winched to safety by the NSW Ambulance helicopter crew and is now being treated at Prince of Wales Hospital.

The two officers assisting the man also needed to be rescued after becoming trapped by the rising tide.

The man told police he fell into the water near Bronte Baths and was in the water for about 30 minutes before the screaming was heard.
