From the bucket to the beret, industry experts weigh in on the trendiest hat styles this season

While many of us are hat shy and reserve the idea of wearing one for summer time, a hat is the best way to punctuate your outfit all year long.

‘Get out of your comfort zone, fashion is sometimes all about taking that risk,’ said Tyler Lambert, designer of the over-the-top, celeb-adored bucket hat.

From the statement toppers to custom creations, industry experts share the hottest trends in hats this season.

THE STATEMENT TOPPER

A large colorful hat is not for the faint of heart but as Thomas Jefferson once famously stated, “With great risk comes great reward.”

The statement accessory was paired with a boxy blue blazer layered over a white bra top and a knit mini skirt, styled by Elly Karamoh, who also is responsible for Lori’s dad Steve Harvey’s bold look.

Doja Cat, Karrueche, Chloe Cherry and Shantel Jackson are all fans of Tyler’s textured buckets who have graced the pages of many fashion magazines for their editorial charm.

‘We recently saw the Marc Jacobs X Fendi Runway with the extreme oversized furry bucket hats, and as we are getting into the winter months the bucket shape and style is really returning in the fashion mix,’ said Tyler.

According to the young designer, a bright bold topper is the perfect accessory to a toned down outfit.

‘The rest of your outfit can be boring, plain, and simple and you can throw a statement hat on an be the talk of the party, he said.

‘Everyone walking past you on the street takes a look at you. They really carry an energy to them of empowerment, and that is what has really made me so happy creating and selling these hats.

‘They give any look a little extra moment for under $100.’

THE CUSTOM DESIGN

The two main advantages to buying a custom hat are style and fit.

‘From a design perspective, our possibilities are endless,’ said New York-based milliner to the stars, Ryan Ramelow.

In addition to having 24 felt colors on hand in his Soho atelier, Ryan can organically dye and create any shade under the sun.

While a custom order takes a little time to complete, owning a hat that meets your design aesthetic and size specifications is worth the wait.

From the shape of the crown and dome to the embellishment details and finishes, the choice is up to you.

Ryan’s handmade hats have been seen on Jennifer Lawrence, Gerard Butler, Sienna Miller, Blake Lively and a many more high profile celebs.

They also were the finishing touches to Bronx and Banco’s spring 21 runway collection.

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HEAD

Grab a soft tape measure (or a long piece of string that you can later measure).

Place the string or tape around the widest part of your head where the hat will actually sit.

About ⅛” above your ear, measure across the mid-forehead, completely circling your forehead.

Stick your finger under the tape so there is a little room.

‘Hats should always be as personal to the wearer as possible, and when it comes to details like color, shape, and/or style, I’d like to think whoever is wearing the hat, is wearing what inspires the most confidence in themselves.’

For a first time hat wearer, Ryan suggests a simple shape in a neutral shade like bone or willow for the the spring/summer and moss or charcoal in the fall.

‘I’ve had so many clients come in timid and a little out of their comfort zone for their first hat; but when they come in for their second one, it’s night and day.’

When purchasing custom, the hat is made to measure.

But when buying online, it’s possible to get the incorrect size.

‘If a hat is slightly too large, the best plan of action is to insert a sizing strip behind the sweatband of the hat,’ explains Ryan.

‘In the event a hat is too small, one can purchase a hat stretcher on amazon for $10-$15, and with a standard home steam iron, apply some steam to the base of the crown as they expand the stretcher to the desired shape and size.’

If a hat loses its shape, 'one can always apply steam to the felt with a regular steam iron and reshape it,' explained Ryan

THE EVERY DAY TOPPER

The knit beanie has been a staple for men and women over the last couple of years.

‘This season, we focused on a more feminine take on the beanie: the beret,’ said designer Lele Sadoughi.

‘Our berets and hats are genuine wool to keep you warm, and our beanies have a custom, blended knit that is itch-free. We also add a grosgrain ribbon in the interior of most styles to allow for the perfect fit.’

To wear a beret, Lele suggests tilting it to one side.

‘Cover up one ear and glide the beret back to expose your forehead. This is the best, most relaxed fit. Tres chic!’

Lele is known for her embellished headbands, worn by the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Hilary Duff, Jessica Alba and Kasey Musgraves, to name a few.

But with her signature hand-sewn crystal and pearl accents, Lele Sadoughi’s cold weather offerings can brighten up any dreary winter day.

One of the most unexpected styles to become trendy in headgear is the balaclava.

Thanks to street style stars and trailblazing celebs like Rihanna, 19th century army accessory designed to only expose the eyes has become all the rage.

If this is a style you’re interested in, Lele’s balaclava is hand embellished with pearls.
