From When The Dust Settles to Silent Witness and Spitting Image: The best on demand TV to watch

ALL4, BBC iPLAYER, NETFLIX, BRITBOX & DISNEY+

When The Dust Settles

This eagerly awaited Danish drama airs on Channel 4 from next week, but the entire ten-part series is available to stream before then. Already a huge success in its home country, it follows the intertwining lives of eight strangers thrown together after Copenhagen is struck by a terrorist attack.

Among the strangers are a couple celebrating their wedding anniversary, a chef planning a radical career change and a Swedish pop star (Malin Crépin, above)

The Jinx

Rare example of a true- crime documentary delivering more than it promises. In this six-parter about real- estate heir Robert Durst, who has been linked to three deaths, Durst ignored the advice of his lawyers and agreed to give interviews.

He was recorded, apparently unaware that his mic was still on, seeming to confess: ‘What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.’ Durst was arrested for murder in 2015, on the day before the broadcast of The Jinx’s finale, and his trial for the 2000 murder of his friend Susan Berman is now drawing to a close. Netflix, available now

American Horror Stories

A spin-off from the American Horror Story anthology series, currently on season ten. The difference is that stories are told over one or two episodes. If you like the parent show and its campy but highly sexualised horror fare, then you’ll enjoy this, although it’s aimed at a younger audience.

In the opener, set in the haunted ‘Murder House’ that features in the first series of its sister show, a troubled young woman gets involved in some horrific high jinks. Disney+/Star, from Wednesday

Spitting Image

We’re promised that no mercy will be shown to the likes of Joe Biden and Donald Trump (above), Harry and Meghan, Prince Andrew and Dominic Cummings

Following its incredible success last year (though never quite reaching its 1980s heights), the satirical puppet show returns for a new series. We’re promised that no mercy will be shown to the likes of Joe Biden and Donald Trump, Harry and Meghan, Prince Andrew and Dominic Cummings, while Covid-19 is set to make a guest appearance too. BritBox, from Saturday

Into The Night

Netflix’s first original series from Belgium is an intense sci-fi thriller in which sunlight has become deadly so a plane full of passengers flies constantly into the night, trying to keep ahead of the sunrise.

The first series ended with them finding a safe haven being run by the military. The second season begins with survival still the characters’ main challenge, but the sun may not be the only threat. Netflix, from Tuesday

The Goodies

To some, The Goodies were a poor man’s Monty Python. But the tandem-riding anarchic trio – hippie Bill Oddie in his baggy dungarees, Graeme Garden, with his air of intellectual hauteur, and Union Jack-waistcoated Tim Brooke-Taylor – were far better than that.

The two series (3 & 4) now available on BritBox include some of their most memorable adventures, such as The Goodies And The Beanstalk, featuring John Cleese as a genie, and the legendary Kitten Kong episode. BritBox, from Thursday

Charming true-life drama that won the 2019 Best Picture Oscar. Mahershala Ali took home an Academy Award, too, for his portrayal of refined pianist Dr Don Shirley; Viggo Mortensen is also impressive as nightclub bouncer Tony Lip, who’s hired by Shirley’s record company to act as his driver and valet during a tour of the Deep South in the early 1960s. Silent Witness

When it began back in 1996, nobody expected Silent Witness to run for the next quarter of a century. This week, the 24th run of the crime drama about forensic pathologists begins on BBC1, minus Liz Carr and the Lyell Centre chief (Richard Lintern, killed off).

All 23 of the previous series are now streaming. Current star Emilia Fox (above) overlapped with Amanda Burton for one series before becoming the show’s mainstay

The Hunt For A Killer

BBC4’s chilling crime series is set in the 1980s and focuses on the real-life abduction and murder of a ten-year-old girl in southern Sweden, as well as the subsequent 16-year search for the perpetrator. BBC iPlayer, available now
