Fury as Sammy the seal shot with a 2ft spear

Residents in a seaside town were horrified after a seal which lives in the harbour was spotted with a 2ft long harpoon spear in its back.

The female, nicknamed Sammy, is well-known by locals in Brixham, Devon, where it plays in the water.

It is not known if the seal was shot intentionally – but locals fears a rogue hunter could be targeting the animals.

The wound is not believed to be serious as Sammy still appears to be eating and ‘full of energy’.

Concerned locals are now asking anyone with information to come forward.

Jackie Cromer wrote on Facebook: ‘I have not put any pictures but I am absolutely disgusted that someone has speared one of the seals in Fishcombe Cove.

‘Why? Just can’t believe someone would do that.

‘Going to check on her again tomorrow. But at the moment they can’t get near her as she keeps diving.’

Steve McMillan added: ‘My friends saw it with the 2ft spear in it’s back yesterday.’

Chris Elliott, another concerned resident, said: ‘Let’s hope it was such an accident and not intentional.

‘The diver should come forward, he knows he’s missing a harpoon if the gun fired accidental.’
