Game of Thrones spin-off following Kit Harington’s Jon Snow is being eyed by HBO

Just months before HBO’s first Game of Thrones spin-off – House of the Dragon – debuts, the network may be eyeing another return to Westeros.

The pay cable network is currently in the ‘early development’ of a new spin-off series that would follow beloved character Jon Snow (Kit Harington), via THR.

Harington is expected to reprise his role as Jon Snow (a.k.a. Aegon Targaryen), with the show said to explore his story after leaving Westeros.

Snow had one of the most intriguing character arcs in the entire series, not to mention being one of the few who managed to survive from the pilot to the series finale.

Snow was first introduced as the bastard son of Ned Stark (Sean Bean), who was taken by the Warden of the North in Winterfell.

He was ultimately sent to ‘take the black’ as part of the Night’s Watch, though he ultimately came back to Winterfell to take his homeland back from another bastard, Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon).

There had long been speculation there was much more to Jon’s lineage that had been let on, which was ultimately confirmed in the Season 7 finale.

Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) learned through his ‘greensight’ that Jon was actually the son Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, who wed legally, making Jon – whose real name is Aegon Targaryen – the one true heir to the Iron Throne.

Despite his true birthright, he refused to accept it in the eighth and final season, causing a divide between him and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), leading to him killing her and Bran being named the new king of Westeros.

The series ended with Bran sentencing Jon to the Night’s Watch – in an effort to appease Daenerys’ supporters – though Jon’s final shots show him walking right through Castle Black, leading the Wildlings back to their true home North of the Wall.

If this show does make it to series, it would be the first sequel to Game of Thrones, with the upcoming House of the Dragon set 200 years before the original series, following the reign of House Targaryen.

There are other Game of Thrones prequels in development, including 10,000 Ships (a.k.a. Nymeria) with showrunner Amanda Segel, 9 Voyages (a.k.a. The Sea Snake) with showrunner Bruno Heller and Dunk and Egg with showrunner Steve Conrad.

HBO also has a few animated projects in the works including The Golden Empire, which is set in a land dubbed Yi Ti, inspired by China.

The new series also comes on the heels of the recent WarnerMedia-Discovery merger, which resulted in new leadership at HBO.

Harington most recently starred as Dane Whitman in the 2021 Marvel Studios movie Eternals, and he has Mary’s Monster and Blood For Dust in pre-production.
